Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for Golden Lake
Environment Canada is advising residents that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and the potential for isolated tornado activity later this afternoon and into the evening.
Forecasters warn that storms moving through the region may produce wind gusts between 90 and 110 km/h, with hail reaching the size of ping pong balls. Officials also note that there is a possibility of tornado development as storm systems intensify.
Damaging wind gusts are expected to be the primary threat associated with these storms. Strong winds may cause damage to roofs, fences, tree branches, and temporary or soft shelters. Localized power outages are also possible as severe weather moves through the area.
Environment Canada and Emergency Management Ontario are urging residents to remain alert and take precautions should threatening weather develop.
“When thunder roars, go indoors,” officials remind residents, noting that lightning continues to be a serious weather hazard that causes injuries and fatalities across Canada each year.
Community members are encouraged to:
- Monitor weather alerts and local forecasts throughout the day,
- Secure loose outdoor items,
- Avoid travel during severe weather if possible,
- Seek shelter immediately if threatening skies or lightning develop,
- Stay away from windows during high winds or hail events.
Large hail can also cause significant property damage and personal injury. Residents are advised to move vehicles under cover where possible and remain indoors during active storm conditions.
Emergency officials continue to monitor weather developments closely and will provide updates as conditions evolve.
