Education

Education Services are responsible for ensuring the delivery of education for our elementary, secondary, and post-secondary students. This includes: building partnerships with local school boards; working with schools to deliver culturally appropriate instruction to our elementary and secondary students; providing educational assistants and education liaison officers; and providing safe and dependable transportation for our First Nation students to the  local elementary, secondary schools and summer school programs.

Elementary school classes start at 9:25 a.m. & end at 3:45 p.m.
Secondary school classes start at 8:15 a.m. & end at 2:15 p.m.

The Education Liaison supports all First Nation students that attend EDPS. Their role is to advocate for students and assist with the well-being of each student. Promotes Culture and works with all AoPFN Programs to support the needs of every child. also working with staff and families to ensure a positive education experience.

The Education Liaison supports all First Nation students that attend OHS. Acting as a mentor and playing an essential role as an advocate for each student. develops plans and programming for students to participate in, like cooking breakfast and breakfast for all to share. Liaison creates and maintains a cultural space for all aboriginal students to use and do their work or just have a chat or hangout. building positive and productive relationships with students, families and communities.  

 

Tutor - Skylar Reed

The Tutor creates a safe workspace that is designed to be a quiet and comfortable atmosphere for students to focus on their classwork, assignments, tests and exams. The Tutor is available to provide one-on-one assistance to help students complete their tasks and offer additional support in challenging subjects.

 

 

In order to revive the language preschoolers are taught the language in the daycare and students from the community are offered classes in the local elementary schools.

Our instruction booklet “Algonquin Conversations / Algonquin Tibjamowin” includes a CD for correct pronunciations and is available for purchase by contacting Education Services.

In partnership with Omamiwinini Pimadjwowin – The Algonquin Way Cultural Centre also offers language classes throughout the fall and winter months.  You can also download E-books of Algonquin Conversations from their website, linked below.

The role of the Education Assistant is to assist with the Algonquin Language Program and support all children that are enrolled in EDPS. Ensuring students make a positive connection in this rich language program so they will benefit from learning Algonquin language and culture.

Pikwakanagan’s Annual Community Graduation Ceremonies are held the first Thursday of July each year at the Makwa Community Centre. Graduates are honoured at all levels from:

  • Daycare – Mindiwin Manido
  • Senior Kindergarten
  • Grade 8
  • High School
  • Post-Secondary
  • Adult Education Programs

Students are presented with a Certificate of Recognition to honor their achievements.

Awards are sponsored by Chief and Council/Casino Rama Awards, Native Language Program and Special Needs.
