Flood Warning Extended: Ottawa River swells as spring runoff surges through Renfrew County
The Ministry of Natural Resources is warning residents in parts of Renfrew County to prepare for continued high water levels as spring runoff pushes through the region.
A flood warning remains in effect along the Ottawa River, particularly from Pembroke to Arnprior, through May 6th, the ministry said. The warning comes as recent rainfall and warm temperatures accelerate the melting of snowpack and lake ice, increasing water levels and flows.
Officials say the combination of runoff and additional forecasted rain could keep water levels above flood thresholds in low-lying areas throughout this week and into next week. While some areas may begin to see levels stabilize or decline, the risk of flooding persists.
Residents in flood-prone areas along the river are being urged to secure vulnerable property and monitor conditions closely for further updates.
At the same time, a flood outlook remains in effect for inland areas of Renfrew County, where elevated water levels are expected but widespread flooding is not currently anticipated.
The ministry says smaller waterways, low-lying regions and areas with poor drainage could still see localized flooding as runoff continues. Officials are advising residents to exercise caution near rivers and streams and to supervise children around fast-moving or high water.
The ministry says it is continuing to monitor weather patterns and watershed conditions and will provide updates as needed.
