AOPFN, OMNR and Golden Lake Properties Association Partner on Walleye Restocking Initiative

The Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation (AOPFN), in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) and the Golden Lake Properties Association, are taking another important step toward supporting the health, sustainability and long-term productivity of Golden Lake.

On Monday, September 28th, 15,000 walleye fingerlings were released into Golden Lake as part of a collaborative restocking initiative involving AOPFN and OMNR. This is on top of the 15,000 walleye fingerlings that were released into Golden Lake last fall as well.  

For the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation, Golden Lake holds deep cultural and historical significance. The lake and surrounding waterways have sustained generations of Algonquin people and continue to play an important role in the community’s enduring relationship with the land and water.

“Water is life, and our lakes and waterways have always been central to who we are as Algonquin people,” said Greg Sarazin, Chief of the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation. “This partnership is an important step in caring for Golden Lake and ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy and benefit from its waters.”

Walleye are an important sport and food fish and play a significant role in the broader aquatic ecosystem. The addition of young walleye to Golden Lake is part of ongoing efforts to support the lake’s fishery and contribute to its long-term health.

Continued collaboration, monitoring and stewardship will be important in understanding the health of the fishery and supporting sustainable management of Golden Lake. As the restocking initiative continues over the coming years, AOPFN looks forward to building on its partnership with OMNR and the Golden Lake Properties Association.

Together, these efforts support a shared commitment to caring for Golden Lake and helping ensure that its waters and resources remain healthy and productive for generations to come.
