Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation Investigating Reports of Northern Pike with Bumps and Sores in Golden Lake

The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation Natural Resources Department is investigating reports of Northern Pike caught in Golden Lake that are showing visible bumps or sores.

Community members have recently shared observations and photographs of fish displaying unusual growths. While the exact cause remains unknown, the Natural Resources Department is working closely with Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) to investigate the issue and determine the source of the condition.

At this time, there is no confirmed cause for the bumps or sores being observed on some Northern Pike. The condition could be the result of a number of natural or environmental factors, and further assessment and testing will be required before any conclusions can be made.

The Natural Resources Department is actively collaborating with MNR biologists to collect information and samples that will assist in identifying the cause and determining whether there are any broader impacts on the fish population in Golden Lake.

Anglers who catch a Northern Pike with visible bumps or sores are encouraged to assist with the investigation by:

• Taking clear photographs of the fish, including close-up images of the affected areas.
• Recording the date and precise location where the fish was caught (specific area of Golden Lake if possible).
• Keeping the fish, if feasible, by placing it on ice or freezing it so it can be collected for sampling.

These photographs and samples will provide valuable information to Natural Resources staff and MNR biologists as they work to determine the cause of the condition.
