Governance & Leadership
The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation (AOPFN) is guided by a strong governance system rooted in accountability, responsibility, and the vision of our people. Leadership is provided by an elected Chief and Council, who dedicate their efforts to advancing the well-being, prosperity, and future of the community while upholding Algonquin values and traditions.
In 2009, our members voted by referendum to adopt a custom election code, giving AOPFN greater authority in determining how elections are conducted. This step reflects our Nation’s commitment to self-determination and ensures that our leadership process reflects the unique needs and values of our community. Under this code, the membership elects one Chief and six Councilors every three years. Together, they carry the responsibility of decision-making on behalf of our people.
To ensure effective governance, Chief and Council oversee a number of portfolios and standing committees that focus on key areas of community life. These include Health Services, Education, Finance, Lands, Estates and Membership, and Public Works. Each committee plays an important role in shaping policy, guiding program delivery, and supporting long-term planning. Through these structures, community members and staff are able to contribute their knowledge and perspectives, ensuring that decisions are informed, balanced, and forward-looking.
This governance system enables AOPFN to respond to immediate needs while also preparing for future opportunities and challenges. By blending traditional values with modern practices, Chief and Council work to protect our lands and culture, strengthen essential services, and build a sustainable path for the next generations. Above all, our governance reflects the principle that leadership is a responsibility carried out in service to the people, grounded in the teachings of respect, honesty, and accountability.
