Political Operations

Chief (Ogima) and Council (Nìganizì) are responsible for providing leadership and governance for Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation and its membership, ensuring the community’s values, traditions and priorities are upheld. They make decisions on matters such as consultation, negotiations, Nation relationships, and governance related to land management, economic development, housing, education, health to support the well-being of the members. Together, they represent the First Nation in negotiations, partnerships, and advocacy with governments and outside organizations.

Key Services Offered

The Political Operations support the Council by playing a key role in managing day-to-day administration for their political responsibilities. It provides services such as policy development, strategic planning, research, communications, consultation and coordination of external partners to advance the First Nation’s priorities.

· Treaty negotiations efforts continue with Canada and Ontario to resolve the historic Algonquin Aboriginal rights claim through an agreed to negotiated settlement agreement which includes the return of land, financial resources, and harvesting rights as determined and sufficient by the Algonquins. Since the signed AIP, the Council has been instrumental in influencing a new internal structure that will better serve and enhance the internal process for effective negotiations.

· Self-Government negotiations will be pursued for various areas of jurisdiction as determined by the leadership with the direction from the membership

· Algonquin Unity for the long-term relationship for collaborative governance and consent for potential projects for economic participation within the territory with the neighbouring 10 First Nation communities in Quebec

· Algonquin Dedicated Space is to be located at 100 Wellington Street in Ottawa at the Parliamentary Precinct. This building will acknowledge and recognize the Algonquin Nations as the host Nation on the traditional territory, This future built space will be defined by membership consultation and engagement.

· AOPFN Legacy Trust developed and designed to for long-term growth of AOPFN resources for sustainability to serve future generations

· Community and Membership Consultation Meetings are set throughout the years to keep the community and membership informed

· Public and Strategic Relationship AOPFN continues to gain recognition and visibility and inclusion in all levels of government, with major project proponents, and business and therefore to ensure that we benefit, ongoing efforts to foster strong relationship remains a priority for AOPFN
