Employment Counselling

The Employment Development Officer can assist members in career decision making, job search guidance, interview skills, skills review, résumé writing, cover letter, etc. that will enhance members opportunity for employment. 

Resource Room

The resource room is located within the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation administration office. The resource room is equipped with computers, printers, and access to the internet for job searching. Clients and community members are welcome to come in and use the resource room.

Summer Student Employment Program

The Employment Development Officer applies to funding agencies and coordinates the summer student employment program each year. The department employs between 15 to 19 summer students per year. The department receives over 25 applications for the summer positions. Every year there has been an increase in student applications. We strongly encourage businesses to employ summer students.

Apprenticeship

The Employment Development Officer can provide clients with information and employment assistance support to apprentices. Apprenticeship is a hands-on training program for people who want to work in skilled trades. In order to become an Apprentice, you must find an employer who is willing to engage in apprenticeship training and is qualified to train you as an apprentice. Then you and the employer must contact the local apprenticeship office to arrange a meeting to prepare the training agreement.

Youth Work Experience

Each year the department supports employment opportunities for youth who are between the ages of 15-30, unemployed and out of school. The program provides practical work experience and the youth will gain new skills and full-time employment with employers within Renfrew County.

Pre-Employment

Assisting members with employment start-up cost, i.e. clothing, CPIC’s, etc.

Kagita Mikam

The department works closely with Kagita Mikam to assist members in meeting their employment and training needs. Kagita Mikam is committed to ensuring that pro-active measures are taken to improve the recruitment, training, and employment of Aboriginal peoples. Kagita Mikam offers many different services to assist Algonquin of Pikwakanagan First Nation members, these include:

• Targeted Wage Subsidy – the objective is to encourage employers to hire clients within the service catchment area and provide on-the-job and off-the-job training that will lead to sustainable employment.
• Mobility Assistance – to assist clients with jobs that are in other localities.
• Purchase of Training – to assist clients who require assistance to overcome existing or anticipated labour market shortage and client barriers by arranging various training courses with qualified services providers.
• Job Creation – to provide opportunities for clients to enhance and develop skills in order to enter or re-enter the labour market.
• Self-Employment Assistance – to assist unemployed clients to become self-employed by starting a viable business.
• Local Labour Market Partnerships – to encourage communities to take responsibility for their own employment and training related needs by building on the capabilities and strengths of organization and relationships that already exist in the community.
