Niminwaya (I Am Well)

Niminwaya:
Niminwaya means I am Well in our Algonquin Language. The Niminwaya Project provides increased opportunities for Pikwàkanagàn to participate in physical activity through community sport and recreation. Pikwàkanagàn has recruited certified physical fitness trainer Terry Ann Groskleg to provide classes 3 times per week for each of the following target groups; ages 2-6 (daycare), 6-12 (after school classes), adults 19-54 and elders ages 55 and up. Niminwaya will be recruiting a recreation programmer for the development and implementation of a recreation program that will focus on afterschool physical activities as well as organized sports. This program also contributes to the seniors wellness program by providing funds for transportation costs to assist our elders to attend physical fitness activities in nearby towns and cities. Currently the fitness classes have approximately 85 participants, but upgrades to the program are in progress and we expect a 30% increase in participation. We are also developing new programs for cardiac rehabilitation patients, men, and youth.

Niminwaya increases participation rates in physical activity and exercise resulting in disease prevention, disease control, weight loss, stress management, wellness management, improved self esteem, decrease in depression, increase in skin tone and a healthier complexion. In particular, the children directly benefit by increasing their physical activity, provision of social outings, reduction in childhood obesity, reduction in the onset of diabetes, improvments in concentration, self-esteem and total body wellness.
