Brighter Futures/Building
Healthier Communities was designed to help promote a healthy lifestyle
and encourage healthy growth and development for all community members.
The program is focused on Health Promotion and Prevention, and physical
activity for all ages. To encourage participation and motivate the community
to get active and stay healthy.
Brighter Futures/Building
Healthier Communities is now located on the second level of the Makwa
Centre.The program provides internet access, video games, basketball,
board games, movies, homework and research.

Kid’s
Initiatives:
The program provides a number of social and recreational activities
for children. They provide, t-ball, mini softball, girls and boys basketball.
They also run an annual 5 week Summer Day Camp, the summer day camp
offers arts and crafts, workshops, recreation, and each afternoon is
a certified swimming program with a Swimming Instructor. Each year fun
activities are planned for Halloween and Christmas.
Youth Initiatives:
The Youth Center is open on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00
p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Makwa Hall. The Youth Center activities include
internet access, movies, basketball, homework area, air hockey, video
games and often hold youth 3 on 3 basketball tournaments.
Community
Initiatives:
The program organizes the annual community Sno-fest which has been taking
place for approximately 15 years. Many activities are held during the
Sno-fest which usually occurs the first week of February. They include
but are not limited to the following: Poker Run, Broomball, Sleigh Rides,
Pageants, Teen Dances, Kid’s Games, Fishing Derby. They organize
other community functions such as Native Solidarity Day activities,
Poker Walkathon, and Walking Clubs. Brighter Futures hosts Fitness Frenzy
on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for community
members. It is also available to the community members Monday - Friday
8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The fitness rooms include a circuit set-up with
various equipment, treadmills, stability balls, steppers and a universal
weight system. Also, with the Fitness Program, we have a Certified Fitness
Instructor/Trainer available on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:00 p.m.
- 1:00 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. - 6:45 p.m. for aerobic classes.
