Education
Education Services for the
Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn is responsible for ensuring
the delivery of an appropriate education for our elementary, secondary,
& post secondary students within the means of a limited program
budget. This includes negotiating partnerships with the local school
boards to deliver culturally appropriate instruction to our elementary,
secondary, and special needs students, Educational Assistants, after-school
programs, and Counselors at all these levels, as well as for the safe
& dependable transportation of our student to these external schools.
The Education Department also administers our own Post Secondary Education
Program. Through it, we offer guidance to help students make their best
career choice, and scholarships that cover the cost of tuition, book
& supplies, & living expenses for full time students only. If
funds are available for Part Time students, only tuition and books are
paid for.
Adult Upgrading is offered right in our community and Community Access
computers are available in our recently upgraded Public Library. An
annual Graduation Ceremony is held to honour our successful students
from all levels of study. This ceremony is held on the third Thursday
of July each year.
Education Services is also
responsible for providing Algonquin Language Instruction for our Elementary
Students. Our instruction booklet “Algonquin Conversations / Algonquin
Tibjamowin”, which includes a CD for correct pronunciation, is
still available for purchase.
The
Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn
have been successful in receiving a Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat
pilot project grant from the Ministry of Education. We are in partnerships
with our two local school boards, Renfrew County Catholic District School
Board and Renfrew County District School Board. The Aboriginal Tutoring
Program has given our students confidence and self-esteem. Both of our
teachers, Jody Alexander and Myles Sabourin offer special support and
learning. This opportunity for our children has proven very successful
and the results are significant to us. Should you have any questions,
please contact our liaison for this program Mrs. Judy Ellis. She can
be reached at Opeongo High School at (613) 735-7587 or (613) 649-2041.
