| The
Algonquin are members of the Anishinabek Nation. Anishinabek elders teach
that the Algonquin have lived here in North America since time immemorial.
There are 11 present day Algonquin Nations; Pikwàkanagàn
in Ontario and ten other Nations in Quebec. Today's border separate the
two but those borders did not always exist and the Algonquin once freely
traveled across the Kichi Sibi (known today as the Ottawa River).
Forced assimilation and residential schooling has destroyed a great deal
of Algonquin knowledge. Culture and tradition passed down orally though
families ground to a halt when religion and government set out to wipe
out Native peoples and culture. Children were removed from their homes
and villages and their language, culture and tradition were banished.
Many of our community members were raised without Algonquin culture, language
and tradition. So much of our past was lost to us. Efforts are now being
made to bring culture, language and tradition into the forefront of our
lives.
Omàmiwinini
Pimàdjwowin
is both a non-profit corporation and a registered charity, established
in 2002 through consultation with the First Nation's membership and agreement
with the Council of the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn, as a
way to meet the community's need for restoring our Cultural Traditions.
Therefore, all registered members of the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn
may become voting members of our organization. However, membership is
not automatic. Please contact our office to add your name to the mailing
list.

Anishinabe
Philosophy
The philosophy of the Anishinabe states: Only take what you need; give
in order to receive; recognize that you are an equal part of all that
is; be thankful for everything that you get. Many teachings relate to
the Creator. Our teachings though are not rigid and can be interpreted
in different ways. It is encouraged that each person develop their own
special relationship with the Creator. It is this difference, this uniqueness
with the Creator that creates meaning.
The Anishinabe Way to Live:
-
Treat the Earth, and all that dwell upon it, with respect
- Remain close to the Great Spirit
- Show great respect for your fellow beings
- Work together for the benefit of all Mankind
- Give assistance and kindness wherever needed
- Do what you know to be right
- Look after the well-being of mind and body
- Dedicate a share of your efforts to the greater good
- Be truthful and honest at all times
- Take full responsibility for your actions
The
Teachings of the Seven Grandfathers include:
- Honesty
- Humility
- Respect
- Courage
- Wisdom
- Love
- Truth
